Which welder should I choose?

The choice of welding machine depends mainly on the material to be worked, the thickness of the workpiece, the frequency of use and the operating environment.

  • MMA electrode welders: simple, versatile, and suitable for both workshops and outdoor work.
  • MIG/MAG continuous wire welders: easy to use, ideal for fast and continuous work.
  • TIG welders: suitable for precision work and high-quality finishes.

Inverter electrode welders

Electrode welders still represent one of the most popular solutions today thanks to their versatility and ease of use.

The Dinamitek catalogue offers various models for hobby and professional use:

The main welding techniques

Before choosing a machine, it is important to understand the differences between the most common welding processes.

INVERTER ELECTRODE WELDING

Coated electrode MMA welding is one of the most widespread and versatile technologies. It can be used both in the workshop and on construction sites and is particularly appreciated for its ease of use.

Modern inverter welders are lightweight, compact, and consume less energy than traditional transformer-based models. They also integrate electronic functions that help the operator achieve more stable and precise welds.

Why choose an inverter welder?

  • Hot Start: facilitates electrode ignition by temporarily increasing the ignition current.
  • Arc Force: keeps the arc stable during welding.
  • Anti-Stick: reduces the current in case of electrode sticking, making it easier to remove.

How to choose the power of the welding machine

A rule of thumb for finding the required current is to multiply the diameter of the electrode by 40.

Electrode diameter × 40 = Approximate amperes required

For example, if using a 3.25 mm electrode, it will be advisable to choose a welding machine capable of supplying at least 130 A.

The electrode thickness must be selected based on the thickness of the material being welded. Electrodes ranging from 1.0 mm to 6.0 mm in diameter are commonly found on the market.

MIG/MAG CONTINUOUS WIRE WELDING

For a more in-depth look: read here

Continuous wire welding in a protective atmosphere is identified by the acronym GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), a term which includes the MIG and MAG processes.

The operating principle involves the melting of a continuous wire that serves as filler material. The weld pool is protected by a gas that prevents contamination and oxidation, promoting clean, uniform welds.

Technomig welders are supplied with a welding kit, available in a rechargeable version or with a disposable cylinder.

The disposable cylinder kit includes a 1-liter cylinder, allowing you to start welding immediately. The duration varies depending on the setting and usage, but it is generally suitable for small jobs and initial tests.

It is important to remember that systems designed for disposable cylinders are not compatible with those designed for refillable cylinders and vice versa.

Can you weld without gas?

Yes. Technomig welders can also be used with flux-cored wire. This solution is primarily used for welding steel and can be particularly useful for outdoor applications.

What materials can be welded?

With the correct combination of wire, gas and accessories it is possible to work different materials obtaining professional results.

The kit includes 0.8 mm stainless steel wire in a 0.5 kg reel and must be combined with a suitable gas system.

Disposable cylinders are not available for stainless steel. Optimal results are achieved using a mixture of 98% argon and 2% CO₂ or 98% argon and 2% oxygen using a refillable cylinder.

MIG welding of stainless steel cannot be performed properly without using shielding gas.

The kit includes 0.8 mm aluminium wire in a 0.5 kg spool and must be combined with an Argon gas supply.

Welding aluminum necessarily requires the use of shielding gas.

TIG WELDING

TIG means "Tungsten Inert Gas".

In this process, the electric arc strikes between a non-consumable tungsten electrode and the material being welded. The work area is protected by an inert gas, usually argon, which prevents contamination and oxidation.

TIG welding is particularly suitable for precision work, thin materials and applications where the final appearance of the weld plays an important role.

The main advantages of this process are the quality of the bead, the reduced presence of spatter and the high control of the weld pool.

Protective devices and essential accessories

Regardless of the technique used, safety must always be a priority.

  • Auto-darkening welding helmet.
  • Leather welding gloves.
  • Spark and heat resistant clothing.
  • Hammer and brush for cleaning the welding seam.
  • Quality cables and clamps kept in perfect condition.

Do you need help choosing?

The ideal welder depends on the type of work, the material to be welded, and the frequency of use. If you have any questions about choosing the right machine, accessories, or consumables, the Dinamitek technical team is at your disposal.
