Pruning in February: Everything You Need to Know with Dinamitek

In February, it's time to start caring for your garden plants again: prune trees, remove dead branches, remove diseased plants, and re-tie them to the supports.

These operations are best performed if the snow has melted in the garden; otherwise, they should be postponed. It's important to remember that flowerbeds with perennials and small shrubs require snow and are not at risk of freezing because the temperature between the snow and the plants never drops below freezing, even if the outside temperature is well below freezing.

Everything done in February will be evident in spring, when the plants will bloom again and grow according to the pattern established in the previous months.

For tree felling, you can find a guide here.

It is necessary to proceed and not delay because a dead or suffering tree could fall on its own, causing considerable damage all around.
If the tree to be felled is taller than 5 meters, consider calling in professionals to do the job.
Once you've removed the dead plants, inspect the climbing plants. If necessary, trim them with pruning shears. Prevent them from reaching the roof so they don't get under the tiles and damage it.

Now you can move on to pruning the plants. Proceed only when there's no frost to avoid damaging the tree. You need to prune the new growth, that is, remove all the branches from the previous year except for the last two or three buds, which will be the driving force behind the new, lush growth.

For correct pruning remember to:

  • cut to a suitable bud
  • make a clean, oblique cut, in the opposite direction to the suitable gem
  • do not leave branch stumps that ruin the aesthetics of the plant
  • Dress cuts with a healing product on cuts of 2 cm in diameter

Clean, downward-facing cuts made on the opposite side of the bud help water flow out.
Before putting away your tools, remove unwanted growth from each stem.

The same scheme also applies to shrubs: dry, weak or damaged branches must be pruned down to the pair of well-developed buds.
For bushes, rejuvenate them by shortening old branches and removing weak ones. If there are suckers at the base of the bush, remove them as well.

For flowerbeds, you should look for and remove all dead plant debris. Mulch should be replaced with dry leaves or peat and maintained because it protects the soil from frost and the typical temperature changes of this season.
Even aromatic plants should have their dead branches removed. Pruning them to reduce their size isn't a bad idea.

In general this is the ideal month for:

  • remove dead, dry and diseased branches
  • eliminate wilted or moldy berries and flowers
  • eliminate crossing shoots, reshape plants

Pruning allows you to thin out the plant and allow for strong, resilient new blooms. Knowing the plant and its blooms is the perfect guide to knowing where to cut, because it's from the cut that growth restarts.
