Load Balancers: Everything You Need to Know
What are tool balancers and how are they used?
Balancers, also called counterbalancers, lighten the workload in a variety of situations, such as assembly lines, benchtops, and assembly lines. They are handling systems designed to precisely counterbalance the weight of the lifted load, improving ergonomics and productivity.
How do they work?
Spring balancers, also known as balancers, maintain constant tension when the cable is extended or retracted. This allows tools and loads to be kept suspended at the ideal working height, without tiring the operator. The advantage for repetitive tasks is enormous: less effort, greater precision, and greater safety.

How do you choose a balancer?
To choose the correct balancer it is necessary to evaluate some fundamental parameters:
1. Scope
Each balancer has a specific weight range. The load must fit perfectly within that range.
- If you choose a balancer that is too powerful : the load “rises by itself” and becomes unmanageable.
- If you choose an undersized balancer : you risk breaking the tool.
Practical example:
If your screwdriver weighs 3.2 kg, choose a balancer with a 3–5 kg range, not 2–3 kg underpowered and not 5–7 kg too powerful.
2. Rope Race
The length of the rope must be compatible with the height of the station and the movement required by the operator.
Practical example:
In a vertical assembly line, a long stroke (2–3 meters) may be required, while in a workbench a short stroke may suffice.
3. Ergonomics and build quality
A good balancer must be:
- robust
- fluid in movements
- easy to adjust
- reliable over time
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mount the balancer without the safety cable : if the hook breaks, the device may fall.
- Adjust the tension “by eye” : the calibration must always be calibrated to the actual weight of the load.
- Using the balancer as a lift : It is not designed to lift people or heavy loads.
- Using a balancer outside its capacity range : compromises operation and safety.
- Ignore signs of wear : Cable, spring and hook should be checked regularly.
- Neglecting periodic maintenance : Regular checks prevent tripping, wear and tear, and voltage loss.
