DINAMITEK PRESENTS THE GUIDE ON THE STORAGE OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS IN THE COMPANY

Storage of hazardous materials, read these reference guidelines

Dinamitek presents its guide to storing hazardous materials in the workplace.

At every production site where hazardous substances are to be stored, special cabinets must be present to ensure that storage is carried out in accordance with the law.

What are hazardous substances?
Paints, oxidizers, pesticides, flammable substances, acids and bases, chemicals, pressurized gas cylinders, and in general any substances hazardous and harmful to humans are considered hazardous substances and require specific storage. This storage serves to minimize the risk threshold present in the workplace.

But what types of wardrobes should be used in these cases?
Special lockers are made of sturdy materials and marked with labels indicating the hazardous nature of the materials contained within, informing all personnel of the danger lurking behind the door. If they are toxic, water polluting, or flammable, the hazardous substance symbol on the product is the same as the one on the locker. These lockers are lockable. The goal is to ensure that these substances do not pose any danger to people or the surrounding environment.

Generally, cabinets for the storage of hazardous materials are divided into 4 macro categories:

  • Eco-friendly cabinets for water pollutants
  • Cabinets for drums and gas cylinders
  • Chemical cabinets
  • Fire-resistant cabinets for flammable materials

The layout of these cabinets, the choice of installation environment, and the like are all strategic decisions that must be made following the safety guidelines provided by the cabinet manufacturers. Each individual case requires a specific design, the result of a careful risk analysis. For further information, please contact our technician directly.

Industrial safety furniture also includes collection tanks.
When storing drums, IBCs, or canisters, collection tanks are used to prevent accidental spills. These tanks must have a specific capacity to limit damage in the event of an accidental rupture of the drum.
The indications of the following regulations provide indications on the dimensions of the collection tanks

  • Ministerial Decree 392 of 16/05/1996 for oils
  • Ministerial Decree 18/05/1995 for storage of hydroalcoholic solutions

These tanks must have a containment volume equal to either the largest storage container on site or one-third of the total liquid stored in the various drums. The higher of the two values is the reference value, because the tank is only useful if it can contain the accidental spillage of the hazardous liquid.
Let's take a concrete example:
If the maximum stored volume is 1500 L, one-third equals 500 L. If a single drum on that site holds more than 500 L, that is the tank's capacity; otherwise, a 500 L tank is sufficient.
The material used to make the tanks depends on the type of liquid to be stored.
