DINAMITEK PRESENTS A GUIDE TO ROOF MAINTENANCE

Roof cleaning with Dinamitek

Dinamitek presents a guide for home roof maintenance

If you want to take care of the maintenance of your home , especially cleaning the roof, you need to think about two main aspects:

  1. how to proceed and therefore obtain all the necessary materials
  2. How to proceed safely, which involves the use of the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), adequate equipment, and certain precautions.

The maintenance we are dealing with today is moss removal from the roof .
The problem with moss isn't just that it's unsightly, it's also dangerous to the health of your roof and home. By retaining water, it can eventually cause leaks. It therefore needs to be removed .

Now let's think about the two main points.

Materials needed:

  • Pressure washer
  • Spatula with handle
  • Anti-moss product
  • Spray gun
  • Waterproof coating
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint roller

To operate safely:

  • Stepladder (if you can't use scaffolding or a roofer's ladder)
  • Tool belt
  • Impact helmet
  • Protective shoes
  • Work gloves

Now you have everything you need to get started.

The first step to working safely is positioning the ladder : it should be placed on a flat surface and never leaned against unstable surfaces such as gutters, laminates, or pipes. Before climbing the ladder, you must put on your PPE correctly ; if your helmet has a chin strap, it must be fastened. A tool belt is very useful for keeping your hands free, which is a great advantage when working at height.

The first thing you need to do is close the gutter drain , so you avoid all the washing residue from ending up there and you won't have to worry about clearing the clogged gutter.

With all the necessary precautions in place, begin your roof cleaning work, working in phases. Using a pressure washer equipped with a brush, begin washing the roof . Work from top to bottom ; obviously, anything you remove from the roof, given its slope, will tend to slide downward. And above all, you won't risk detaching the tiles. Any residual moss that wasn't removed by the pressure washer should be removed with a spatula .

Once cleaning is complete, you need to protect the roof and prevent moss from forming again. Spraying the roof with a specific product will achieve good results. Use a spray gun and proceed slowly to ensure the product penetrates all the pores of the tiles. Obviously, the moss remover should be sprayed once the roof is completely dry .

Now all you have to do is apply a waterproofing product. Using a brush, with the necessary calm and care, you will achieve excellent results. For large surfaces, you can use a roller. Crossing the brush strokes will achieve a more accurate result . Here too, the goal is to ensure the product penetrates all the tiles well: what you are applying will act as an insulating layer, but obviously it won't work if it has holes. If the product is colored, you will immediately know if you are applying it correctly. So, take all the time you need.
It's good practice to apply two coats of waterproofing , especially if you're using a colored one. A good result is rewarding and a reward for the time invested.
