The first thing you need to know about pruning is that if you have to cut a tree that exceeds 3/4 meters in height, you must contact a professional, for your safety and the health of the tree.

If you are determined to prune your trees you need to ask yourself two things:

  1. do I have a good project?
  2. Do I have the right tool to do this job?

-The plan is useful to avoid proceeding haphazardly. Trees aren't bushes and don't need to be pruned often, so it's best to carry out the work carefully from the very first step.

What are the objectives of pruning? A project is always established based on the objectives you want to achieve .

  • Clear a view
  • Thin out too thick hair, to allow it to be aired and for light to filter through
  • Improve the aesthetic appearance of the plant
  • Remove branches that are too thick

The ideal product for pruning your garden trees is a compact, small, and lightweight chainsaw. The McCulloch range offers extremely powerful and versatile machines with a large cutting capacity. Once you've decided on the project and gathered your equipment, all you have to do is get started. Let's see how.

The optimal time to prune a tree is when the plant is dormant , which begins when it loses its leaves in autumn and continues throughout the cold season. The plant will heal its wounds as soon as it begins growing again, and it will also be less susceptible to sap loss or attack by dormant insects. Winter is also less likely to cause disease , so the wounds caused by pruning will not compromise the plant's health.

Obviously, this rule applies if the goal of pruning is not to eliminate dead or diseased branches from the plant: in these cases , the branches can always be cut without putting the plant at risk.

Pruning should only be done if you know exactly what you're doing: it's always best to cut small branches, and never thin out more than a quarter of the canopy. Branches larger than 10 centimeters in diameter should only be removed if numerous, and between 5 and 10 if there's a good reason for the decision.

To thin out the canopy, you need to make thinning cuts, eliminating weak, diseased, and growth-impaired branches. This type of pruning allows the plant to maintain its natural shape. The cuts should be made at a 45-60 degree angle.

To reshape the plant, you need to make shortening cuts. This involves cutting off most of the foliage, shortening the branches to a few buds: from there, lateral shoots will develop. This can only be done on young branches , no more than a year old.

The cut is made as follows: above the lateral bud, 0.5 cm, make an inclined cut parallel to the direction of the bud.

Cutting thick branches is more delicate; it's best to proceed in small stages to avoid tearing the bark : the first cut should be made midway down the branch, 30-45 cm from the insertion point. The second cut should be made from the outside, a few centimeters from the first cut on the side furthest from the branch. These two cuts will cause the branch to break. At this point, simply remove the stump with a 45-60 degree cut.
