Let's start with a simple but effective consideration: to drill straight holes, always insert the drill bit perpendicular to the object. Apply pressure to the drill only after you've started drilling, so you can ensure a firm grip. Especially if your drill is very powerful, it's essential to use the auxiliary handle to avoid losing your grip when the drill stops rotating.

To avoid being inundated with dust, you can use special vacuum cleaners or adopt DIY techniques, such as taping a nylon bag under the point you want to drill.

The first question we ask ourselves when choosing the material and technique to adopt is: in what field of application do we need to operate?

1. When drilling metal, choosing the right bit material is crucial: the tools must be made of HSS high-speed steel , with ground tips. This solution is suitable for working non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, iron, and unalloyed steel. Metal bits have a pointed tip , ground at 118 degrees, which allows them to penetrate the metal easily and maintain the same diameter along the entire length of the tip.
For stainless steel, cobalt-based HSS drill bits are used , which have a 135-degree pointed tip that improves drill centering. These drill bits require lubrication with a specific cutting oil for cooling during drilling.

Drilling soft metals produces shavings, while drilling hard metals produces chips. The cutting edges of drill bits for soft metals are therefore flat, while those for hard metals are sharp. Drill bits for soft metals are also suitable for drilling plastic.

Technically, proceed as follows: make a pre-hole with the smallest bit (choose a bit that has a diameter that corresponds to the central part of the larger bit that you will use later)

Drilling speed is inversely proportional to the hardness of the material: drill slowly through carbide! You'll know if you're drilling at the right speed by observing the chips/slag produced. Toward the end of the drilling, reduce the speed further and extract the bit at minimum speed.

2. To drill wood, drill longitudinally , following the grain of the wood. To make the hole, choose twist drill bits with a centering tip and two roughing heads. This solution includes internal chip removers that leave the hole clean.

For large but shallow holes, use Forstner bits, plastic bits, or coated bits ; for deep holes, use beam bits; for through holes starting from 30 mm in diameter, the solution is a hole saw . The hole saw should be used with an impact drill . This solution is suitable for drilling all soft materials, such as fiberboard, as well as wood.

Drilling speed is very important: if it's slow, you'll get imprecise holes, if it's fast, you'll leave burn marks.

It's very important to apply the drill bit precisely. The piece of wood to be drilled should be secured with clamps and a countersink should be applied. This will prevent the fibers from becoming detached when drilling through the wood.

If you need to screw in a countersunk screw into the hole you are drilling, remember to countersink the hole deep enough to allow the screw head to disappear.

3. When drilling into concrete, always perform one preliminary step: check the wall for electrical cables and pipes. To do this, use a metal detector.

The suitable bit for drilling into walls is the stone bit which is equipped with a hard metal plate welded to the tip.

Depending on the material you need to drill, the characteristics of the drill you need to use change.

A drill or hammer drill is used on clinker, brick, or concrete walls . A hammer drill is needed for traditional masonry . Hammer drilling is not used on porous walls or paneled elements.

When drilling delicate surfaces, you need to find a way to prevent the drill bit from slipping. On tiles, simply apply a piece of crepe tape. The surface of the tape alone is sufficient to prevent slipping.

If the material being drilled is hard, more friction occurs between the tool and the drilled hole. This means that holes in tiles or concrete should be lubricated with water.

The general indications, valid for drilling any material, are:

  • let the tool do the work, you never have to apply too much force to get the hole;
  • never hold the piece to be drilled in your hand, but fix it with clamps;
  • always wear appropriate PPE;
  • cools/lubricates the drill bit when needed.
