Sandblasting is an industrial surface cleaning process that uses the mechanical force of an abrasive material propelled by a jet of air. The sand acts by scratching and penetrating, which is why the "sand" is quartz-like and has a fine grain and sharp edges.
This technique is used to prepare parts for powder coating because it allows for the removal of rust, residue from old paint, and all surface imperfections. After sandblasting, the surfaces are perfectly smooth, eliminating traces of paint, primer, rust, oxide, and scratches, leaving the surface rough and ready for sanding and a coat of primer. After sandblasting, steel and cast iron surfaces have a silvery appearance, while bronze and brass surfaces have a dull appearance. In some cases, it is used for aesthetic purposes, such as sandblasting glass to create special designs.
This operation takes place inside sandblasters , special machines composed of:
- SEALING CHAMBER
- ABRASIVE TANK,
- DUCT FOR AIR AND ABRASIVE MATERIAL,
- ROTARY WORK TABLE
- SANDBLASTING NOZZLE
The operation is very simple: the abrasive material mixed with the compressed air jet mechanically works on the workpiece and is expelled once the process is complete. A regulating valve allows the air/sand mix to be adjusted. This mixture passes through the nozzle and is accelerated, making contact with the workpiece at high speed: it is the kinetic energy of the granules that causes the sandblasting.

Sandblasting is simply the impact between sand particles and the workpiece. This creates dust that should not be inhaled because it is harmful, which is why the work is carried out in a closed, airtight chamber.
The sandblasting chambers have a grid floor and a system to extract dispersed particles. The operator, however, works in isolation and protected from these residues.
The steps to follow to work on a sandblasting unit are:
1. Attach the nozzle to the power supply unit
2. Insert the siphon into the power supply unit
3. Insert the gun into the power supply unit inside the sandblaster
4. Connect the siphon tube to the lower inlet of the power supply unit inside the cabin
5. Place the pieces to be sandblasted into the cabin
6. Close the sandblasting cabinet carefully
7. Turn on the cabin light and ventilation
8. Position yourself with the cabin arms in order to make the most of the visibility window
9. Place your foot on the air jet control pedal
10. Proceed with sandblasting
11. Turn off the machine and remove the machined pieces
12. Remove all residues
13. Disconnect the power supply
14. Disconnect the nozzle
There are some tricks that allow you to perform perfect sandblasting.
- Nozzle size : for soft material choose a large nozzle, while for hard material or very thick pieces a small nozzle is needed.
- The type of grit, to be chosen based on the material of the piece to be sandblasted: silica sand, or quartzite powder, sodium bicarbonate, corundum or silicon carbide
- The size of the grit, because as the size of a grit increases, the impact force will also increase
- The air pressure that imparts velocity to the sand. The value is in kg/cm2: 2.5 to 3.5 for brass, aluminum, and bronze; 3 to 4 for cast iron; 4 to 5 for steel.
