Introduction: Choosing the brush cutter model


Choose a battery-powered trimmer only if you have a small garden. Typically, a trimmer's battery life is around 30 minutes, while charging takes two hours. If you don't want to take long breaks, choose the type of trimmer that best suits your needs.
Models with internal combustion engines have greater range but are noisy. In this case, you'll need to be careful about operating hours to avoid disturbing your neighbors. If you opt for a petrol model, it's best to choose a 4-stroke engine, as 2-stroke engines don't fully combust the fuel, resulting in particularly aggressive and polluting exhaust emissions. The operator must take this health risk into account.
Corded models have one drawback: the cord. You need to make sure it doesn't get in the way; risking cutting the power cord while trying to mow the lawn is dangerous for both the operator and the machine itself. You should also consider that the cord may not be long enough, and you'll need to connect the tool to an extension cord.

PPE: What to wear before starting

• Protective visor that protects eyes and face from anything that is thrown by the rotary movement of the tool
• Heavy, reinforced work overalls, must be worn tightly fastened
• Cut-resistant gloves also help prevent calluses and blisters. Nitrile models are comfortable, offer good dexterity, and are resistant to tears and abrasions.
• Protective chaps to protect the legs from the knees down. This is the part of the body most exposed to impact from material fired at high speed by the brush cutter. Nylon models reinforced with padding or rigid PVC elements are excellent.
• Work shoes with protective toecap and non-slip sole
• Hearing protection, including earplugs or earmuffs. Choose a model that protects but doesn't isolate: it's important to remain aware of what's happening around you.

How does a string trimmer work?
The motor applies a significant rotational force. The plastic cutting line thus reaches a high tension, a result of the centripetal force generated by acceleration. The cutting line is thus rigid, even though its cutting power is due to the inertia generated by the rotation. The grass blades are cut cleanly.

How do you use the trimmer?
To use the trimmer, it's important to choose the appropriate rotation direction. Debris must be expelled from the opposite direction of the cut, otherwise the trimmer will clog because it would get trapped along the line's rotation path. Therefore, if the line rotates counterclockwise, debris must be expelled from the left side, meaning the trimmer should be used from its right side, and vice versa.
Once you've chosen the rotation, you should never let the head hit the ground, but rather work 10-15 cm above the ground. The head should be positioned parallel to the lawn.
Cutting is facilitated by the high rotation speed. Acceleration must be maintained during cutting and deceleration must be maintained at the end of the swath to avoid overworking the machine.
You only start cutting when the machine has reached a good rotation speed.

How do you use the trimmer on a slope?
Proceed with slow, circular movements. Start at the bottom and work your way lengthwise. Don't follow the gradient, but move in lines. You'll achieve better results with less effort and greater safety.

Where is the trimmer used?
Let's start by explaining where not to use it: it's best to avoid rocks, branches, and other obstacles. Near plants, posts, and fences, use the mower at low speed and in a vertical position to avoid cutting at different heights. The cut should be thinned out near fences, low walls, trees, and any other obstacles.
Don't use in the garden. This isn't a rule of thumb, but a matter of common sense: weeds and invasive plants must be pulled out by the roots, otherwise they will grow back.

Expert advice
How to cut close to the edges. Tilt the trimmer so that the line hits the grass at a slight angle. Tilting the trimmer cuts less grass, resulting in a softer effect. This is done to avoid having patches of lawn with short grass.
Near walkways or where a border is needed, tilt the trimmer so that the line is vertical to the lawn. Simply walk along the path to create a professional-looking border.
If you encounter obstacles or tall grass, we recommend moving in a horizontal "U" pattern across the grass, as if it were carved into it. This should be done around the entire length of the obstacle, but each new U should slightly overlap the previous one. With precision and patience, you'll achieve a perfect and, above all, uniform cut.
