Here's a great project for DIY enthusiasts: today we're talking about how to build a bird aviary.

The first step is to draw the project's floor plan. A good idea is to create an L-shaped plan to expand the interior space and create numerous nooks where birds can find shelter when needed. A sliding door can be inserted into the L-shaped cutout, which can also be operated from the outside. The main entrance door, on the other hand, can be installed on the short side—the step of the L, so to speak.
To create the roof, build a wooden frame and cover it with a waterproof, radiation-resistant sheet. This solution ensures an ideal climate inside the aviary.

The aviary can be made of steel, but you need to be comfortable with welding techniques.

For those seeking a more practical solution, you can make it out of wood, a material that's much easier to handle. Wood is a porous material, so it's best to use a waterproof varnish. With specific natural resins, you can be sure you're not using anything harmful to birds. Painting the elements before assembly makes the job easier.

Create panels with a wooden frame and a pre-painted steel mesh as the fixed surface. Use a stapler to attach the mesh with U-shaped nails. The mesh remains on the outside of the aviary.

These panels can be 120 cm wide. You can place two of them on the long side of the L. If you use a tongue-and-groove system, assembling the aviary is much easier. You can shape the slats with protrusions and recesses yourself or have the materials prepared at the specialty store where you buy them. The fixing is more stable if you use a non-toxic glue and attach metal plates to the corners of the frame with stainless steel screws. The foot of the L can be as small as 100 cm, so you'll need six 120 cm wide panels and two 100 cm wide panels. The height is up to you; the important thing is to have all the frames the same height.

This structure must be anchored to the ground with suitable foundation plates or with steel cables and tensioners (a less aesthetically pleasing solution).
Using a long masonry drill bit, drill a hole in the ground, using the same technique used for threading: proceed with a clockwise turn and a half, then a half-turn in the opposite direction, and pull up. This will begin to form the pilot hole. This will make it easier to dig the hole for the concrete pour and anchor the frames.

The pole is secured by nailing it into the concrete with nails protruding 8-10 cm, or with special helical shanks readily available at DIY stores. Obviously, until it sets, the structure must be held upright, perhaps using boards and battens.
The post brackets are already pre-drilled for the insertion of tie rods. After securing the post, the anchor holes for the tie rods must be drilled through the holes in the bracket. The anchor holes are 1.5 or 2 mm smaller than the thread. This fastening step must be performed with extreme care to ensure a stable final result.
For the flooring, we use sludge collection trays, inserted into sliding guides at the bottom of the structure. These trays must also be equipped with protective mesh to prevent contamination from contact with excrement.

In our aviary, we've designed a main entrance door and a sliding door. The second door is very useful for keeping birds.
The main door is a swing door, secured with exposed steel external hinges. For maximum convenience, it also features a handle.
For the sliding door, a track must be inserted between the two pieces of wall, but above the internal frame of the structure.

Inside the aviary, you should place perches for the birds, also homemade from non-toxic natural wood. These structures should have a diameter of 0.8-1.2 cm. This size is sufficient to allow your birds to rest comfortably and in the correct position. Feeders and waterers should be secured to the internal mesh. To complete the environment, it's a good idea to place a few twigs suitable for use as perches.
This project aims to provide basic guidelines for building an aviary. The dimensions can be adapted to the space requirements of your garden or terrace. The structure's layout can also be easily modified, making the job easier by creating modular assemblies, exactly as proposed here for the L-shaped layout. The important thing is to create a large space with suitable nooks that serve as shelter for the birds.
