DINAMITEK PRESENTS A GUIDE ON WELDING TECHNIQUES, MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT TO CHOOSE

Welding with Dinamitek methods and equipment

Dinamitek presents a guide on welding techniques, machines, and equipment to choose from.

You want to start using a welding machine, but you're confused about which equipment to use for the various jobs. Machine types, different techniques, and different equipment—you need to get organized.

This guide is intended to provide clarity for those who want to try their hand at welding and are unsure about the choices they should make in terms of equipment.

We begin by showing the types of machines available in the Dinamitek store, sorted by type and power, from the lowest to the highest for each manufacturer.

Let's clarify what is meant by electrode welding and continuous wire welding

INVERTER ELECTRODE WELDING

Inverters are welding systems that involve electrode welders that operate at up to 200 amps. They are lightweight and small, typically weighing around 5-10 kg. The inverter is a current transformation device that varies the input voltage up to 40-50,000 Hz, thus reducing the transformer's size and, therefore, its weight, while maintaining the same power and frequency parameters.

How to choose the right electrode welder with the right power

To determine which welding machine to choose based on the diameter of the electrode to be welded, simply multiply the diameter of the electrode itself by 40 and then choose a welding machine that provides at least the resulting current value, with an intermittence ratio of 35%.

E.g. To weld a 3.25 diameter electrode [3.25 x 40 = 130 (A)], the welder must provide at least 130 A at a duty cycle of 35%. The electrode thickness is chosen from those available on the market (from 1.0 to 6.0 mm in diameter), based on the thickness of the material to be welded.

MIG MAG CONTINUOUS WIRE WELDING
For further information , read here

Continuous wire welding in a protective atmosphere has long been well known: it is designated by the symbol GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), which in international symbology has replaced the previous MIG (Metal Inert Gas) and MAG (Metal Active Gas) methods, which are still in common use. It is characterized by the fusion of a filler metal (continuous wire) within a protective atmosphere created by a gas; the wire and gas are conducted by a torch that supplies the electrical energy for fusion directly to the wire, via an arc that strikes between the end of the wire and the workpiece. The electrical power is provided by a specially designed source; normally, direct current is used with positive polarity to the wire.

Technomig welders come with a welding kit, with a choice of either a refillable or disposable kit. The disposable welding kit also includes a 1-liter gas cylinder, so you can start welding right away. The 1-liter cylinder is estimated to last about 20 minutes of effective welding. With the disposable welding kit, you'll need to purchase a welding gas cylinder from a specialized supplier, the same one you'll use to refill the cylinder once it's empty. It's important to pay close attention to the welding kit you choose, as disposable cylinders cannot be connected to refillable kits, and vice versa.

Technomig welders can also be used without gas, but in that case, flux-cored wire must be used. Please note that this procedure can only be used to weld iron, which can also be welded with gas and without flux-cored wire.

Let's take an overview of the materials that can be welded:

  • for stainless steel use the specific kit 802037 .

In the kit you will find the 0.8 mm wire in a 0.5 kg reel, obviously this kit will be combined with the kit that is purchased together with the welding machine, choosing between rechargeable and disposable.
Disposable gas cylinders are not available for stainless steel. The most suitable is the argon one, but it's not very effective. The optimal mixture is 98% argon and 2% CO2 or 2% oxygen, which can be found in refillable cylinders at gas suppliers. It's not possible to weld stainless steel without gas.

The kit includes 0.8 mm wire in a 0.5 kg spool. This kit must be paired with the kit purchased with the welding machine, choosing between rechargeable and disposable. In the latter case, argon gas must be used. Aluminum cannot be welded without gas.

TIG WELDING

TIG stands for "Tungsten Inert Gas." The arc strikes between a non-consumable tungsten electrode that acts as the cathode (negative pole), while the workpiece—protected by a non-oxidizing gas flow—acts as the anode (positive pole). These gases or mixtures must be chemically non-oxidizing in order to be used.

The advantages offered by the TIG process provide great versatility of use, ensuring impeccable quality even with minimal thicknesses (tenths of a mm). For several years now, arc welding, in a protective atmosphere of argon with a refractory electrode (TIG = Tungsten Inert Gas system), has been used worldwide in nearly all metalworking fields.
